Fab five used to winning
The Broncos have five players who have been a part of all three SJHL championship seasons. Matthew Kirzinger, Tory Allan, Steve Schroeder, Scott Schroeder, and Brady Wacker simply have no idea what it means to lose.
Allan could return
It is hoped Humboldt will welcome back Tory Allan, who missed the final 10 playoff games due to injury, for the ANAVET Cup. Upon completion of the Credit Union Cup finals, head coach Dean Brockman said it was unlikely Allan would return for the first two games in Portage, but there was hope he could suit up for game three back in Humboldt on April 21.
Kirzinger wins Playoff MVP
Matthew Kirzinger was named the SJHL Playoffs Most Valuable Player. He led the league with eight goals in the postseason and finished in a tie with teammate Tanner Vandesype for the overall scoring lead with 14 points. Kirzinger joins former Bronco teammates Jordan Schindel and Nathan Heinen as winners of the SJHL Playoff MVP Award, a trophy that was only introduced following the 2006-07 postseason.
Coaches converge
While Humboldt and Melville were busy competing for SJHL supremacy, the rest of the league’s coaches and scouts stopped in Regina during the weekend of March 29 for the Sask First Midget tournament. “We’re very pleased to be part of the Sask First Midget program,” said SJHL President Laury Ryan, whose league is the title sponsor of the event. “We feel it’s a great program for the kids and a great program for our teams. It reaches out to a lot of Midget players and gives them an opportunity to be seen and, hopefully, catch an eye and move on in their hockey path.”
The three day tourney features the top 160 Midget players (excluding AAA) from across Saskatchewan. Some of the gems unearthed through Sask First include Dean Prpick of Nipawin and Nolan Souchotte of La Ronge.
