For the most part, veteran forwards have led the way in scoring for the six squads in the SJHL’s Sherwood Conferences.
The exceptions can be found in Yorkton and Notre Dame, where a pair of rookies are challenging for the scoring lead on the Terriers and Hounds.
KINDERSLEY KLIPPERS
It took forward Jordan Braid just nine games to surpass his point total from last season with the Kindersley Klippers.
After setting up all three goals in Kindersley’s 3-2 win over the Flin Flon Bombers on Oct. 4, Braid upped his point production to six goals and 11 assists as the Klippers compiled a 7-1-0-1 record though nine games.
Last season, Braid had eight goals and seven assists in 15 games with the Klippers, but he also spent some time with the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades.
Veteran 20-year-old forwards Kirk Pearce and Brett Leedahl were hot on Braid’s heels for the team scoring lead, behind by one and two points respectively.
YORKTON TERRIERS
Through 10 games, 18-year-old rookie Torey Stott led all Yorkton Terriers in scoring with four goals and six assists.
After scoring 11 times to go with just a pair of assists in 54 games last season, 19-year-old forward Cody Zubko has reversed that trend so far this campaign with a goal and eight helpers through 10 games, during which the Terriers compiled a 6-2-0-2 record.
Veteran forwards Derek Serdachny (5g, 3a) and Corey Silverson (1g, 7a) are also in the mix for the team scoring lead as is defenceman Greg Coburn (2g, 6a).
MELVILLE MILLIONAIRES
Veteran players have led the way for the Melville Millionaires so far though the first seven games of the season.
With two-goals and eight assists, 20-year-old forward Kale Dolinski held a one-point lead over 19-year-old left winger Aaron Decorby (5g, 4a) for the team scoring lead.
Both Dolinski and Decorby are hoping to improve upon last year’s campaign when they put up 41 and 24 points respectively.
Levi Lind (3g, 6a) and Daniel Hope (4g, 4a) also helped the Millionaires jump out to an early 5-1-1-0 record.
WEYBURN RED WINGS
A pair of 20-year-old returning forwards have been leading the way so far for the Red Wings.
After putting up 23 goals and 34 assists in 56 games last season, captain Preston Shupe has kept up his point-a-game pace with four goals and six assists as the Terriers compiled a 5-5 record to start the season.
Meanwhile Torrey Lindsay almost matched Shupe’s production through 10 games with one less assist coming off an 18-goal, 38-assist campaign.
Other returning forwards off to strong starts include Rhett Bly and Carter Selinger, while defenceman Shawn Courtney been a pleasant surprise with two goals and five assists through 10 games after scoring just one goal in 24 games last season.
ESTEVAN BRUINS
Chad Filteau has made the most of his expanded role with the Estevan Bruins this season.
After putting up just two assists in five games to start the campaign, the 19-year-old forward reeled off a seven-game point-scoring streak to give him a team-leading seven goals and eight assists through 12 games for the 4-6-1-1 Bruins. In 58 games last season, Filteau notched 12 goals and 26 assists.
After finishing second behind departed veteran Payden Benning with 56 points in 58 games last season, Kyle Stroh has picked up where he left off with six goals and three helpers through 11 games.
Hometown boy Brant Harris has improved his offensive output substantially this season with four goals and five assists in 12 games after putting up just 12 points in 40 games last year.
NOTRE DAME HOUNDS
Growing up in Wilcox, brothers Rylan and Jaden Schwartz dreamed of one day playing for the Notre Dame Hounds together in the SJHL.
This year, that dream has become reality and the Schwartz boys sat first and second in scoring after seven games for the 3-4 Hounds.
After leading Notre Dame in scoring last season with 29 goals and 34 assists in 58 games, Rylan, 18, sat atop the Hounds leaderboard once again with eight goals and seven assists.
In his rookie SJHL season, Jaden, 16, was right behind his older brother with five goals and eight helpers through seven contests.
Veteran 19-year-old forward Kyle Ireland also started the season strongly with four goals and five assists in that span.
