Kim Davis’ seventh season at the helm of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League won’t be his last.

The MJHL commissioner signed a three-year contract extension last month.

“I am proud to continue to represent the MJHL as its commissioner,” Davis said. “Over the past six years our reputation has grown as an exciting Junior A hockey league.

Under Davis’ leadership, the league added the highly successful MJHL Showcase Weekend — a three-day event which highlights the talents of the league’s many outstanding young hockey players in one centre for scouts from the NHL, NCAA, CIS and major junior hockey.

This year’s MJHL Showcase will be held Oct. 9-11 at Winnipeg’s Dakota Community Centre. All 11 MJHL teams will play two games over the weekend.

    LEAGUE HAS A NEW LOOK

The MJHL unveiled a new logo prior to the season opening.

“The new logo is bold, fresh, clean-looking and clearly presents a strong image for our league,” said commissioner Kim Davis.

A few different logos were posted on the league’s website a couple of months ago, asking for fans’ input on the re-design.

    TEAM WEST TAKES SHAPE

Seventeen MJHL players tried out for Team West at Yorkton, Sask.

The squad, which will be named later this month, will compete at the World Junior A Challenge in Camrose (Nov. 2-9).

The Selkirk Steelers had a trio of forwards — Josh Schappert, Michael Wilgosh and Colan Jackson — at the camp.

Other MJHL hopefuls included forwards Craig Simchuk and Tim Hayduk (Winnipeg Saints), Zeanan Buternowski (OCN Blizzard), Adam Stoykewich and Colin Phaneuf (Winnipeg South Blues), Shane Luke (Dauphin Kings) and Ryan Duhaime(Waywayceecappo Wolverines), defencemen Caleb Suderman (Winkler Flyers), Dale Warkentin (OCN Blizzard), Eddie Friesen and Brent Wilson (Portage Terriers), Scott Macaulay (Winnipeg Saints) and Steve Shamanski (Dauphin Kings).

Swan Valley Stampeders goaltender Chris Ward was also in the mix.
