  • MJHL - SHERWOOD DIVISION REPORT

    Dauphin Kings
With an eye on hosting the RBC Championship next spring, the Dauphin Kings appeared torn as to what to do this year — go for a league title, or start building for next year?

They might have answered that question when they dealt 20-year-old sniper Richard Jodoin to Estevan of the SJHL before Christmas, and then tried to ship 20-year-old  Dustyn Clegg to the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL for future considerations.

But the Clegg deal fell through after the deadline, as Clegg was back in Dauphin after that deal was announced.

Dauphin looks good enough to win another first-round playoff series. As for winning the league? That remains to be seen.

    Neepawa Natives
When P.O. Lemieux bolted for the college ranks after Christmas, Neepawa dealt for Matt Shenher from the Dauphin Kings.

The well-travelled Shenher will be looked upon to help the Natives earn the first crossover playoff spot in MJHL history.

    OCN Blizzard
A middle-of-the-road team in the Sher-Wood Division, the OCN Blizzard didn’t make too many drastic moves.

They did add J.P. Samson from Les Inouk de Granby of the LHJAAAQ for future considerations. He only had one minor penalty in his first two games with the Blizzard, so it remains to be seen how this trade will work out.

    Portage Terriers
It was a case of the rich getting richer when the Terriers pulled off another deadline deal to help them in their push to win a league title.

The Winnipeg South Blues traded  20-year-old forward Carson Rowat to the Portage Terriers for the MJHL list rights of 16-year-old forward Andrew Allan and future considerations.

Rowat was shipped to the Winnipeg South Blues before the start of the year along with Colton Kennedy, 19, as well as the MJHL list rights two 16-year-olds, Jake Heisinger and Garrett Desmond for defenceman Drew Ellement and forward Donnie Glennie.

So now, it works out Portage gets Rowat, Ellement and Glennie for three 16-year-old prospects. Kennedy was later shipped to the SIJHL for Kyle Friesen, who has two points this season.

Rowat, Ellement and Glennie have combined for 115 points this year.

    Swan Valley Stampeders
The slow rebuilding of the Stampeders continued at the trade deadline, as 20-year-old vets Craig Cornelsen and Justin Giesbrecht were shipped to playoff-bound teams.

The Stamps received futures for Giesbrecht and got 19-year-old Carter Selinger for Cornelsen.

Selinger had a point in each of his first two games with the Stampeders.

    Waywayseecappo Wolverines
The former whipping boys of the Sher-Wood Division are no doubt enjoying the fact they are not the one team in a six-team division with no real playoff possibilities.

However, the Wolverines are not winning as often as they were earlier in the season.

To help bolster their team, the Wolverines went out at the deadline and made a few moves, including trading for 20-year-old defenceman Brendan Bradbury from the Beausejour Blades for a 16-year-old prospect.
