SELKIRK STEELERS
The Steelers’ magical season finally came to an end in the MJHL final.
The Portage Terriers beat the Steelers four games to one in the championship series.
Adam Pleskach, from Beausejour, Man., led all playoff scorers with 19 goals and 40 points in 17 games. He finished off his junior career by being named the RBC Player of the Month for March.
Teammate Russ Payne (13 goals, 39 points), out of St. Andrews, Man., was a close second.
Selkirk beat the Winkler Flyers and Winnipeg Saints, both in six games, to advance to the final.
WINNIPEG SAINTS
The Saints went home a little earlier than expected.
After posting the top record in the MJHL during the regular season (48-11-3), Winnipeg came up short in the Addison Division final against the Selkirk Steelers.
The Saints were 44 seconds away from forcing a seventh-and-deciding game back in their own building. But Steeler Taylor Dickin potted the equalizer and Adam Larsen scored in double OT to eliminate the Winnipeg squad in six games.
Blair Macaulay led the way offensively with 10 goals and 28 points in 10 games.
WINKLER FLYERS
The Flyers gave the Addison Division champion Selkirk Steelers a run in the opening round of the playoff before losing in six games.
Nick Lazorko, Harry Mahesh, Jordan Neduzak and Craig Cornelsen each averaged at least a point per game in the post-season.
A product of Rockwall, Tex., Lazorko was also named the club’s MVP after a 54-goal, 103-point campaign.
Blueliner Troy Kliever was named the club’s top defenceman while Kyle Wells (top defensive forward) and Mahesh and Greg Reimer (co-winner, rookie of the year) were also honoured.
Former Flyers goaltender Eddie Belfour, who played 963 games in the NHL and has the third-most wins (484) in league history, will be inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame Oct. 3.
WINNIPEG SOUTH BLUES
The South Blues didn’t qualify for the post-season, but honoured the accomplishments of individual players at their year-end
awards banquet.
Evan Gravenor (26 goals and 68 points) took home the Garry Memorial Park Trophy as the club’s MVP.
Brent Poplawski was honoured as the top blueliner while Peter Stowkewych was the rookie of the year.
BEAUSEJOUR BLADES
The Blades, who posted the worst record in the league at 6-52-2-2 are in rebuilding mode.
And they’ll have to do it under new leadership.
Blades head coach and assistant GM Kurt Walsten resigned after the season.
