    WINNIPEG SAINTS

Scoring, it appears, won’t be a problem for the Saints this season.

Eight players are averaging better than a point per game for the high-powered Winnipeg squad, which has a 5-5-0-0 record.

Hometown hero Dan Watt scored five goals and 19 points in just eight games while Rejean Carriere, from La Broquerie, Man., potted a team-high seven goals in 10 outings.

Freshman Jordan DePape (eight points in seven games) was a runner up for the MJHL’s Husky Energy Award as the league’s top rookie performer of the month.

    SELKIRK STEELERS

An early October weekend sweep of a home-and-home set with the Winnipeg Saints put the Steelers on top of the Addison Division with a 7-3-0-0 record.

Selkirk shooters unloaded a league-high 385 shots on opposition goaltenders through the first 10 games.

Russ Payne, out of St. Andrews, Man., has been the top gun with 10 goals and 17 points.

Goaltenders Joey Rewucki (3.25 goals-against average, .888 save percentage) and Matt Shenher (3.67 GAA, .891 sv%) have shared the load between the pipes.

Defenceman Dylan Heide, 17, was one of the finalists in consideration for the MJHL’s rookie of the month honours.

    WINKLER FLYERS

Sophomore defenceman Caleb Suderman was among 17 MJHL players who went to Yorkton, Sask., to try out for Team Canada West, which will play at the 2008 World Junior A Challenge (Nov. 1-9 in Camrose, Alta.).

The Flyers, off to a slow start at 3-6-0-0, have scored more powerplay goals (20) than any team in the league.

American Nick Lazorko (Rockwall, Tex.) picked up 10 of his team-leading 15 points with the man advantage. Hometown boy Jordan Peters sniped nine goals in as many games.

Winkler acquired the rights to forward Vinny Muchalla, 20, from the BCHL’s Penticton Vees for future considerations and also dealt forwards Am Sidhu and Kevin Larsen to the
Neepawa Natives.

    WINNIPEG SOUTH BLUES

Under new head coach Lyle Loewen, the South Blues have gotten off to a 5-4-0-0 start.

Goaltender Eric Potvin (Laval, Que.), who was acquired from the AJHL’s Fort McMurray Oil Barons in August, is among the league leaders with a 2.48 GAA and sparkling .932 save percentage. Potvin played with the Winnipeg Saints last season prior to being dealt to Fort McMurray.

Increased production from the powerplay, which is clicking at just 14%, would definitely help the South Blues move up the Addison Division standings.

    BEAUEJOUR BLADES

The Blades shook up their roster earlier this month, putting together a six-player deal with the OCN Blizzard.

Beauejour dealt goaltender David Aime, 19, who tried out for the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen in September, Jordan Smith, 18, and the rights to 17-year-old Brett Adnum to OCN.

They received F Jason Bernatchez, 20, Jordan Beardy, 17, Lee Reimer, 18, and future considerations.

Reimer is playing with the AJHL’s Canmore Eagles. He led the Manitoba AAA midget league in scoring last season with 69 points in 39 games.

The Blades, who have the worst powerplay in the MJHL (10.3%) also sent d-man Ryan Cornforth to the AJHL’s Olds Grizzlies for forwards Dallas Goodrunning, 19, and Kyle Harty, 18.
