  • Uptempo by Ryan Walter - Add Pressure To Get Most Out Of Neutral Zone Regroup Drill

    Thursday, March 04, 2010 11:18 AM
As a coach, I am sure that you have found, as we have, that when we create an atmosphere of competition inside the structure of our practice plan, we get more intensity and focus from our players. Coaches tend to work on their team regroup structure in the neutral zone without any pressure. This drill starts with a quick, organized regroup and ends with a full ice 3 on 2.

    - Five players set up and touch up in the neutral zone.
    - Two defencemen stand at the opposite blue-line and then close the gap as the opponent regroups.
    - The coach passes or spots the puck for the regrouping five and calls out the regroup sequence.
    - Each line working on regroups would start with a defenceman passing directly up to the strong winger. The five players (three forwards) skate and play out the 3-on-2, with the D initially joining the play.
-Use different regroups throughout your sequence: D Up, D-to-D Up, D-to D cross ice (through the low seam), D Hinge (or Up, Back and Over).

Hockey is a game that needs some team structure within the flow of the game. As you work on your team’s ability to regroup in the neutral zone (team structure), add in an opponent and play out the 3-on-2 (creative flow).
