The Boston Bruins have added a key piece to their future with the selection of centreman, Tyler Seguin from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers. The Brampton, Ont.-native was a co-winner of the OHL scoring title this season and was also voted the Red Tilson Award winner, which is given to the OHL’s Most Valuable Player. He registered an impressive 48 goals and 106 points in 63 games. Seguin was also in on the scoring of a whopping 43.2 per cent of Plymouth goals this season, by far the highest percentage of any draft-eligible prospect.
On top of creating offence this year, Seguin was also focused on improving his all around game, something that he says he made a lot of progress with this season.
“Coming into this year, I talked to my coaches and realized that to get to the next level, you can’t only just have skill and be able to put the puck in the net, but you also have to be a full, complete player; and playing centre, that’s my role.”
Mark Edwards of hockeyprospect.com says Seguin made serious progress on working on his all-around game and his organization had him ranked first in their scouting rankings. “Seguin is such a well-rounded prospect,” said Edwards. “His combination of size, puck distribution and scoring abilities, plus the fact he makes players around him so much better, and it all added up to him being our top-ranked prospect for the draft.”
E.J. McGuire of NHL Central Scouting says Seguin has a similar game to several highly successful NHL players.
“A right-shot centreman is a little bit more of a rare commodity. He has the ranginess of an Eric Staal or maybe Joe Thornton. Perhaps the most glowing and most unfair comparison for a right-shot centre might be that of Steve Yzerman. Am I saying that Tyler Seguin is a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame like Yzerman is? I think not. But I think that’s the kind of game he plays at the Junior level that Steve Yzerman played for the Detroit Red Wings.”
Yzerman was Seguin’s favourite player growing up and he patterns his game after how he played.
“Growing up, he was my favourite player, just the way he played the game, being very good defensively, as well as offensively and also being a leader for the Detroit Red Wings. I definitely play my game like he did.”
Seguin credits Plymouth Whalers head coach Mike Vellucci for holding him accountable and helping him develop into the player that he has become.
“He’s a great coach. He always gives me constructive criticism, I mean, if I go down and score a goal, but I make a bad defensive play to start the play off, he’ll let me know that and I really appreciate that kind of stuff.”
Now, Seguin can look forward to joining the Boston Bruins. Boston fans will have the chance to enjoy watching Seguin play and potentially develop into an NHL star in the future.
